IBS Target Guide: Which Benchrest Target Do You Need?

Benchrest shooters know their equipment. They know their load, their seating depth, their scope, and the wind conditions on their home range. What trips people up — particularly those new to IBS-sanctioned competition, or clubs setting up a match for the first time — is the target selection.

If you’re new to benchrest, think of it as the next level of precision rifle shooting — a discipline focused entirely on accuracy at distance, with specific equipment rules and competition formats that differ from standard NRA rifle matches.

IBS (International Benchrest Shooters) uses two distinct target formats: Hunter Rifle (HR) and Benchrest (BR). They’re scored differently, used at different distances, and not interchangeable. Add in rimfire targets and the red vs. black print question, and the catalog can feel more complicated than it needs to be.

National Target is the licensed IBS manufacturer. We make every target in this guide to official IBS specifications. Here’s how to find the right one.

Hunter Rifle vs. Benchrest: The Core Difference

Before getting into specific targets, it helps to understand the two formats.

Hunter Rifle (HR) competitions are scored by points — like NRA rifle targets, each shot earns a score based on where it lands within defined rings. Hunter Rifle rules are designed to be accessible to shooters using standard hunting-style equipment, with fewer restrictions on stock, caliber, and weight than the Benchrest class.

Benchrest (BR) competitions are scored by group size — the goal is to put all shots as close together as possible, and the winner is determined by measuring the center-to-center distance of the widest two holes. Benchrest rules are strict on equipment, and the targets reflect that: they’re designed for measuring groups precisely, not for point scoring.

If you’re running a Hunter Rifle match, order HR targets. If you’re running a group-shooting Benchrest match, order BR targets. They are not substitutes for each other.

Hunter Rifle Targets (Scored by Points)

IBS 100 YD HR

The IBS 100 YD HR is the official score target for IBS Hunter Rifle competition at 100 yards. Printed in red on 12″ × 19″ heavyweight paper with a large ~13″ diameter bull — the red print is the current IBS standard, chosen for visibility at distance and speed of scoring during timed relays.

IBS 300 YD HR

Benchrest Targets (Scored by Group Size)

Benchrest targets are a different animal. Rather than a single large scoring bull, they feature multiple small aiming bulls arranged on the sheet — shooters fire a group at each bull, and the groups are measured for size. The tighter the group, the better the score.

IBS 100 YD BR

The IBS 100 YD BR is the official group-shooting target for 100-yard IBS Benchrest competition. Multiple small bulls per sheet on heavyweight paper — the stock is critical here, as a clean, precise hole is essential for accurate group measurement.

Best for: IBS Benchrest group-shooting at 100 yards
Pack: 100 sheets
Price: $20.90

IBS 200 YD BR

The IBS 200 YD BR scales the format for 200-yard Benchrest competition. Same multi-bull layout, sized appropriately for the longer distance.

Pack: 100 sheets

Rimfire Benchrest Targets

IBS 50 YD RF RED

The IBS 50 YD RF RED is the official IBS rimfire target for 50-yard competition, introduced in 2023 with red print for improved shot visibility. Printed on 14″ × 18″ heavyweight tagboard, the robust stock was specifically chosen to lie flat, staple cleanly, and resist buckling during match conditions.

The red print makes a meaningful difference at 50 yards, where spotting impacts quickly between relays matters. This is the current IBS-mandated format for 50-yard rimfire matches.

Best for: IBS 50-yard rimfire Benchrest competition
Sheet size: 14″ × 18″
