After 60 years of manufacturing official NRA targets, the question we hear most often isn’t about paper weight or print quality.
It’s simpler than that: which target do I actually need?
The NRA pistol lineup covers everything from 50-foot slow-fire practice to 50-yard law enforcement qualification. The targets share a familiar format — black bull, buff paper, official scoring rings — but the differences in size, distance, and scoring standard matter. Order the wrong one and you’re either training to the wrong spec or can’t use the target for official scoring.
This guide maps each major NRA pistol target to the distance and discipline it’s designed for, so you can order with confidence.
The Quick-Decision Table
| Distance | Discipline / Use | Target |
| 50 ft | Slow-fire pistol practice | B-2 |
| 50 ft | Timed & rapid-fire pistol | B-3 |
| 25 yd | Timed & rapid-fire pistol (NRA competition) | B-8(P) |
| 25 yd | Police pistol qualification (NRA format) | TQ-15 |
| 50 yd | Law enforcement / tactical silhouette | B-27(24″) |
| 50 yd | Economy silhouette, same scoring zones | B-27E |
| 50 yd | Reduced silhouette center only | B-27C |
50 Feet: Practice and Slow-Fire
B-2 — 50-Foot Slow-Fire Pistol Target

The B-2 is the standard NRA slow-fire pistol target for 50-foot indoor ranges. A single 3 1/16″ black bull with scoring rings from 7 through X, printed on a 10½” × 12″ sheet. It’s the workhorse of indoor pistol training — simple, properly sized for 50-foot work, and inexpensive enough to use in volume.
If you shoot at an indoor range with a standard 50-foot lane and you’re working on fundamentals or slow-fire strings, this is your target.
Best for: Individual practice, club slow-fire events, indoor range use
Sheet size: 10½” × 12″
Bull: 3 1/16″
Pack: 100 sheets
B-3 — 50-Foot Timed and Rapid-Fire Target

The B-3 is built for timed and rapid-fire strings at 50 feet. The bull is scaled specifically for the faster pace of those strings — giving shooters the right scoring standard for 10-second and 5-second relays at indoor distances.
If your club runs NRA conventional pistol matches at 50 feet across all three stages — slow, timed, and rapid — you’ll need both the B-2 and the B-3.
Best for: 50-foot timed and rapid-fire stages
Sheet size: 10½” × 12″
Pack: 100 sheets
25 Yards: NRA Competition and Police Qualification
B-8(P) — Official 25-Yard Timed and Rapid-Fire Target

The B-8(P) is the designated NRA target for 25-yard timed and rapid-fire pistol events. It features a 5½” black bull with official NRA scoring rings (9, 10, and X), printed on a 21″ × 24″ sheet — large enough for clear visibility at 25 yards while maintaining precise scoring zones.
This is the target you’ll see at NRA sanctioned pistol matches for the 25-yard timed and rapid stages. If you’re preparing for NRA competition or running a club match to official spec, this is the one.
Best for: NRA 25-yard timed and rapid-fire pistol competition
Sheet size: 21″ × 24″
Bull: 5½”
Pack: 100 sheets
TQ-15 — 25-Yard Police Qualification Silhouette

The TQ-15 is the NRA’s standard law enforcement qualification silhouette for 25-yard courses. It features a full human silhouette with defined scoring zones — the format used in NRA Police Pistol Combat and state-level law enforcement certification programs.
If you’re running qualification drills for a department, academy, or NRA instructor certification course at 25 yards, this is the correct target.
Best for: 25-yard law enforcement qualification, NRA Police Pistol Combat, instructor training Sheet size: 24″ × 41″
Pack: 100 sheets
50 Yards: The B-27 Family
The B-27 is probably the most recognizable pistol silhouette in American shooting. It’s been the standard for law enforcement qualification and tactical pistol training for decades. But there are three versions — and the differences matter.
B-27(24″) — Full-Size Official Silhouette

The B-27(24″) is the full-size official version: 24″ × 45″, with scoring rings 7 through X and a complete human silhouette. It’s the target specified for NRA and many state-level law enforcement qualification courses at 50 yards, and the format used in tactical pistol training programs nationwide.
If compliance with official qualification standards is required — for departmental certification, NRA instructor courses, or agency procurement — this is the one to order.
Best for: Official 50-yard law enforcement qualification, NRA-sanctioned tactical courses
Sheet size: 24″ × 45″
Scoring: Rings 7–X
Pack: 100 sheets (paper), 25 sheets (cardboard)
B-27E — Economy Version, Same Scoring Zones

The B-27E keeps all the scoring rings (7 through X) but trims the lower portion of the silhouette below the 7-ring. The result is a slightly smaller sheet that uses less paper — and costs less per sheet — while maintaining full scoring fidelity.
For high-volume training, club drills, or any situation where you need the B-27 scoring layout but aren’t running an official qualification that mandates the full-size format, the B-27E is the practical choice. It’s available in multiple colors (black, blue, green, orange) for varying visibility needs.
Best for: High-volume training, club practice, budget-conscious qualification prep
Sheet size: ~22.5″ × 34.5″
Scoring: Rings 7–X (same as full B-27)
Pack: 100 sheets
B-27C — Scoring Center Only

The B-27C strips the silhouette down to just the scoring center — the ring zone without the full figure. It’s a smaller, more economical sheet used as an overlay on existing backers or for focused center-mass accuracy work where the full silhouette context isn’t needed.
Best for: Accuracy drills, overlay use, focused center-mass training
Pack: 100 sheets
B-27 vs. B-27E: Which Should You Order?
This is the most common source of confusion in the B-27 family. Here’s the practical breakdown:
Order the B-27(24″) if:
- You’re running an official qualification course that specifies the full-size format
- You need to meet NRA, agency, or departmental procurement requirements
- You’re running NRA instructor certification courses
Order the B-27E if:
- You’re running training or practice drills where official spec isn’t required
- You’re buying in volume and want to reduce per-sheet cost
- You want color options for better visibility or range differentiation
Both targets use identical scoring rings. A score on a B-27E is evaluated the same way as on a full B-27.
A Note on Law Enforcement Qualification Targets
Beyond the B-27 family, several specialized qualification targets are used by specific agencies and organizations. The IALEFIQP is the official qualification target of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI) — used in both pistol and rifle qualification courses. The ICEQT is the target specified for ICE firearms qualification.
